Niho taniwha is a site-specific case study for Tūranganui-a-Kiwa that tangata whenua can interact and visualise the energy and mauri of atua relating to tsunami risk. The contextual location of Tūranga was crucial in understanding the community’s needs to raise tsunami awareness for their own iwi, hapū and whānau. Research into the nature of the whenua, particularly the Hikurangi Subduction Zone, strongly indicated the severity in which a tsunami may affect Tūranga, and the importance of understanding and preparing for this potential event.
